Dancing to the popular and high energy rhythm of a Dhol, Chimta or Manjira with joyful songs of love, happiness, prosperity and fulfillment – that’s what Bhangra is all about. This popular dance form from Punjab, a northern state of India originated as a celebration of the harvest festival (Baisakhi). No wedding or celebration in Punjab is now complete without the community getting together and dancing the Bhangra.
So much so that Bollywood too has engaged audiences worldwide by including Bhangra song and dance sequences in popular films. Hits like “Rang De Basanti” and “Maujan Hi Maujan” are some of the Bhangra style dances that our SAE Bollywood performances have included.
With the large and wide spread north Indian community in Canada and the US, Bhangra lessons have really caught on. At Sanskriti, we have Bhangra classes populated by students of all ages and backgrounds. We have also trained Bhangra teams for South Asian festivals and competitions.
Register now to learn the fancy footwork and dance to the rhythm of Bhangra. It won’t be long before you’re saying “Balle Balle”!
